Client: High Street Supermarket Chain
Project: Regional and Distribution Centres
Locations: 6 across the UK
Introduction
Design, manufacture and installation of new regional and chilled distribution centres at strategic locations across the UK.
With nominated main contractor, Simons Construction, ISD has designed and installed 6 centres with a total value of £12m.
Through innovation to programmes, panel build times have been reduced by 25% over the course of the projects. The original contract at Washington was 21 weeks for the insulated panel works; whereas, at Belvedere, the programme was effectively reduced to 12 weeks.
Each centre has 'compartments' with up to 4-hour firewalls erected by isd to the full height of the buildings that divide the warehouse or freezer and chiller facilities.
Projects
Typically, the facilities designed and installed by ISD measure 400m long by 100m wide.
Each facility incorporates a freezer and chillers 1,2 and 3 utilising 35,000m2 to 55,000m2 of insulated paneling.
With the availability of advanced paneling and, in response to changes in fire regulations, polystyrene panels used in the first project, were subsequently replaced by more efficient PIR wall and ceiling paneling on the later projects.
In terms of speed of erection, 12,000m2 of freezer paneling has been stood in just two weeks using isd advanced installation systems. These techniques, which involve the use of the latest lifting and handling equipment, have contributed to the reduction by 25% in installation programmes..
Although the plans for each project were initially drawn around a standard requirement, changing circumstances called for significant later revisions.
In particular, the building now occupied in Kent, initially built for leasing, was extended to form an L-shaped structure to accommodate chill chambers.
This extension also called for upgraded fire-protection on the adjoining walls. Nonetheless, the programme was completed within the schedule agreed with the main contractor.
The six projects are located at:
- Washington, Tyne and Wear
- Wakefield, West Yorkshire
- Bedford
- Falkirk
- Skelmersdale, Lancashire
- Belvedere, Kent
